Metro Manhole Covers

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, better known as Metro, has its own manhole cover designs.

At the Meadowside Nature Center in Rockville, Maryland, this storm drain manhole cover has taken on the guise of a turtle swimming in the water.

The characters for the city of Beijing are stamped along the top of this manhole cover (although I’m not sure about the meaning of the last character on the right). In the center is the character for rain.  Thanks to Dan G. for the photo.

Malmo, Sweden

Malmo, the third largest city in Sweden (population:309,000) is located in the southern tip of the country. Malmo’s 1437 grant of arms is depicted on this manhole cover.

I was recently in Trenton, the capital of New Jersey. Trenton is a small city with some interesting old architecture, but unfortunately it feels devoid of life. During my brief stay in downtown Trenton I saw more manhole covers than people walking on the sidewalks.
