When my colleague Adrienne went on a recent trip to Hatteras Island, North Carolina, she diligently searched for manhole covers (thanks Adrienne!). After initially not finding any manhole covers to photograph, she went into the local visitors’ center to get guidance on where to find them. Turns out that the island relies heavily on septic systems, which means there is less need for manhole covers. Adrienne ended up finding manhole covers at a single location, and also captured the local (mostly but not exclusively) nautical arts scene.
